On the eve of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, an event with which Richard Garneau dreamt of wrapping up his Olympic career, Radio-Canada is paying tribute to one of its most illustrious voices with the creation of a radio documentary, a television documentary and an e-book in his honour. All three works will trace the highlights of Olympic history as he experienced them. Fans will also have an opportunity to revisit the days of the Montreal Olympics in 1976 through an archival exhibit focusing on Radio-Canada’s artisans and Richard Garneau himself, who had some of the greatest moments in his career there.
For six decades, Richard Garneau’s voice and presence kept Canadian audiences tuning in to the excitement of the Olympic Games. Richard Garneau has travelled the globe, commented on every sport imaginable and become a regular guest in the living rooms of French-speaking families. He marked the worlds of media and sports as few other sports commentators have. All his life, he followed the advice of his mentor, René Lecavalier: “Never lose your capacity for wonder!”
With uncommon elegance, Richard Garneau expanded our horizons and shared his passion for sports. Over 23 seasons, he was a fixture on La soirée du hockey. Even today, thanks to his coverage of 23 Olympic Games, Richard Garneau holds the world record for the number of Olympic Games covered by a sports journalist. When he passed away in 2013 at the age of 82, the accomplished communicator and diehard fan of the Olympic movement left us a half-century of Olympic memories, now forever immortalized in digital format. He was made a member of the Order of Canada and the Ordre national du Québec and even received the prestigious Pierre-de-Coubertin medal posthumously from the International Olympic Committee in Sotchi in 2014, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Canada’s Olympic movement.
