Our Plan for the Future Public Broadcasting in a Changing World

CBC/Radio-Canada serves the second largest and one of the most diverse countries in the world. Our new five-year strategy, 2015: Everyone, Every way, launched on February 1, 2011, recognises that the public broadcaster can't be all things to all people. In its scope, however, it stakes the claim that we can be something for, and mean something to, every Canadian. Whether it's connecting them to this country, to their communities, or to each other as individuals with their own realities and interests, CBC/Radio-Canada will be there — for everyone, every way. But, to deliver our strategic plan for Canadians, we need the CRTC to give us a modern, flexible regulatory framework.

2015: Everyone, Every way — three key thrusts

More Canadian content — stories by, for and about Canadians.

In the next five years:
  • More programming that helps create a shared national identity
  • Completion of the renewal of our English and French news services
  • More original, innovative and entertaining homegrown stories
  • Overwhelmingly Canadian prime-time schedule
  • Greater diversity on our airwaves
  • Ten multiplatform signature events per year on our English and French networks
Our progress:
  • Signature events are CBC/Radio-Canada's innovative multiplatform media and community events designed to deliver significant cultural impact and to bring together Canadians. These events are unique to the national public broadcaster and like nothing provided by other Canadian broadcasters. Examples include CBC's recent and highly successful healthy living initiative, Live Right Now, and its hugely popular annual CBC's Hockey Day in Canada; and Radio-Canada's Christmas Concert with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra.
  • Soon, our networks will announce their new signature events for the upcoming Fall season.

More regional presence — going where Canadians want us to be.

In the next five years:
  • New stations and expanded service in select underserved markets
  • Leadership in all markets that we serve
  • New delivery models
  • Expanded regional programming beyond news
  • New partnerships to enhance our reach and impact
  • New local and hyperlocal websites
Our progress:

This Spring, CBC announced the first phase of its plan to introduce or improve services to more than six million Canadians over the next four years. This phase includes:

  • CBC Kamloops — new radio and online services (Spring 2012)
  • CBC Kelowna — new afternoon radio program serving the British Columbia interior (Fall 2011)
  • CBC Victoria — enhanced programming to better serve the needs of Vancouver Island audiences (Fall 2011)
  • CBC Toronto and CBC Calgary — new weekend local news programs on television, radio and internet (Toronto, fall 2011; Calgary, winter 2012)

More digital services — reaching and engaging with Canadians in new ways.

In the next five years:
  • Doubling our current level of digital investment
  • Extended leadership in Canadian digital spaces
  • Strengthened competitive position of our multiplatform offering
  • Expanded specialty channel offering
  • Multiplatform suite of branded Canadian destinations
  • New platforms and new ways of engaging Canadians
  • New partnerships
Our progress:

Recently, we've launched important new digital offerings:

  • Our new CBC News mobile app and redesigned CBC.ca website offer a quicker, cleaner digital experience that gives Canadians real-time access to the news and information that matters to them
  • Radio-Canada's TOU.TV continues to raise the bar, launching a new mobile website, a new application for android devices, and announcing an agreement with LG to make TOU.TV available directly on next generation television sets
  • Espace.mu, Radio-Canada's new online music service, offers listeners over 80,000 musical selections under seven genres (chanson/pop, classical, rock, country/folk, hip-hop, jazz, and world music) as well as unique online music features and ways for sharing the content
